Sagra di San Giovanni 2025
Where fire, folklore, and fireworks light up the night Each June, Lake Como transforms into a stage for one of the region’s most enchanting traditions — the Sagra di San Giovanni. It is held each summer on the weekend closest to 24th June (the Feast of St John the Baptist). This year, it will take place on 23 and 24 June 2025 in the picturesque hamlet of Ossuccio and its surrounding village. The villages burst into life for the festival with firelight, music, and a spectacular fireworks display across the lake. What happens at the festival? This festival is a tribute to the tragic event of the vivid legendary story of Isola Comacina. In 1169, the island was attacked, leading to its burning down and leaving it in ruins. This sad but powerful story is remembered every year through a spectacular fireworks show. As the sun sets, people light candles in a touching tribute to the island's tragic past, placing them on windowsills, balconies, and along the shoreline. This beautiful moment sets the stage for the evening's highlight — a spectacular 45-minute fireworks display at 10:30 pm, as boats gather in the bay to watch. On Sunday, a flotilla of decorated ‘Lucie’ boats sails to Isola Comacina, where a religious procession heads to the ancient ruins of the Basilica of Saint Eufemia for Mass. The day ends with the Regatta of San Giovanni, a thrilling race between teams from local villages in traditional boats About the areaLake Como is a breathtaking glacial lake located in the Lombardy region of northern Italy known for its stunning natural scenery and charming towns.
